Markus Snead, Missouri 2011 National Bible Bowl Champion | | January - March 2011 The National Baptist Laymen's Movement opened its 2011 year in Nashville, Tennessee for the annual Mid-Winter Board Session. The theme was "Solidarity with the Savior, Men in Solidarity with the Savior" Special guest during the week of the laymen was Forestal Lawton (left) president of the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc. Brotherhood and Director of the Men's Department, Baptist World Alliance. The program for the week was comprised of several noted pastors within the National Baptist Convention family. They were: Dr. John Reed, Oklahoma City, OK "A Dangerous Assignment" Matthew 10:16 Rev. Terrell Davis, Wichita, Kansas "The Educational Abortion of Black Males" Matthew 8:5 Dr. Geoffrey Guns, Norfolk, Virginia "Fully Persuaded" II Timothy 1:1-12 Dr. Calvin McKinney, New Jersey "Each One, Reach One" John 1:35-51 Dr. Clarence Moore, Georgia "Where Fell It" II Kings 6:1 The week also included reports from the leaders from the various ministries that included their plans for the new year. The week closed out with the annual Thursday morning special projects prayer breakfast. The first three places of the states were: 1st - Alabama 2nd - Kansas 3rd - Michigan Wolverine A. L. There may been a first in the history of the Walter Cade, Jr. workshops in 2011. Due to the way Easter fell this year, the Walter Cade, Jr. Western-Farwest and the Western-Midwest workshops convened on the same weekend of April 15 - 17, 2011. The city of Las Vegas, Nevada and the Inter-mountain General Baptist Convention laymen hosted the Walter Cade, Jr. Western-Farwest workshop. Kirk Harris (r) is the state laymen president for Nevada. The city of Minneapolis, Minnesota and the Minnesota State Laymen hosted the Walter Cade, Jr. Western-Midwest Workshop. Rev. Jerry Moss is the state laymen president for Minnesota.
Long time laymen instructor Dr. John Nix-McReynolds passed away April 1, 2011 and his home-going service was held on April 9, 2011. He was one of the first to succeed Dr. Warren Stewart and Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, who were the long time lecturers in the tenure of Walter Cade, Jr. Dr. David L. Kellye II was the other lecturer following Richardson and Stewart. |
The class that the laymen had been recruiting and signing-up men for the last two years began this past June 21, 2011 during the National Congress of Christian Education in the Allen Jordan Seminar. I. V. Reeves (right) was leading the effort and serving as one of the instructors. The name of the new class is Biblical Sons Strong in Grace. | Dr. H. B. Charles opened up the laymen's Allen Jordan Seminars. Charles is the pastor of the Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida. He started his week-long lectureship series with the laymen on a high and spiritual note. He challenged the attendees with the lecture titled, "The Wise Prayer of a Weak Man". Proverbs 30:7-9. Charles is one of the convention's great young preacher/pastors. This is the second time that he had preached for the laymen. For the first time, the Congress leadership assigned a discussion leader to each department to speak on the Congress theme,"Solidarity with the Savior Through His Word". The laymen's discussion leader was Rev. Carlos Williams. Williams was also the speaker for the Mission in Education and Evangelism luncheon on Thursday for the National Junior Laymen Day The evangelistic ministries of the National Baptist Laymen did a great work for the Lord in witnessing during the Congress week. The Wives & Women's Supporter ministry (right) witnessed at the Dove Recovery House. The National Baptist Laymen sponsored and evangelistic ministry in Nassau Bahamas just prior to the start of the National Baptist Convention in Orlando, Florida. There were 13 that came to Christ during a prison ministry and 13 came to Christ at street service. Angeleen Gray, Wichita, Kansas was the Wives & Women Supporters Prayer Breakfast speaker to open the laymen's convention at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. This was the 88th annual session for the laymen. The convention's theme was, "Solidarity with the Savior, In Service and Sacrifice" The pastors who served as speakers on program were: Rev. Damon Moseley, Detroit, MI. Virgil Jones, Los Angeles, CA "Lost and Found" Luke 15:9 Darryl Koon of New Jersey is the 2011 - 2012 National King and Alvin Moore, Birmingham, AL is the John L. Webb recipient, Layman of the Year. (photos above left) John McCormick of Las Vegas, NV passed away on September 25, 2011. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Las Vegas. He was the immediate past president of the Nevada & California Interstate Baptist Convention where he hosted two Walter Cade, Jr. workshops during his tenure. He was the 2008 John L. Webb Layman of the Year recipient. He made several trips to the Gulf coast for the laymen's work-witness tours for the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Walter Cade, Jr. Southeast Workshop was held in High Point, North Carolina on the week end of September 23 - 25, 2011 where Richmond Turner is the president of the North Carolina Laymen's League. In the center is Robert Owens, Vice President of the Georgia laymen receiving the trophy for the state with the most delegates.
| October - December 2012 The 2011 Walter Cade, Jr. Midwest Seven State Workshop was held in Dearborn, MI on the weekend of October 21 - 23, 2011. Melinda Cade (left) of Kansas City, Kansas passed away on October 27th. Melinda was the widow of Walter Cade, Jr., the 4th president of the National Baptist Laymen's Movement who passed away in 2000. Melinda continued to serve. At her passing she was the program chairwoman for the Wives and Women Supporters prayer breakfast held each September during the Annual Session. Pamela Patterson (right) of Fort Worth, Texas passed away on November 18, 2011. She was the daughter of former National Laymen Vice President and General Secretary Curtis Savannah and Virgie Savannah who serves in the Wives & Women Supporters ministry. Pam served on the National Laymen Classification Committee. She worked with the registration team.
