Layman of the Year

 

Each year the National Baptist Laymen name a layman of the year. The person is the recipient of the John L. Webb Award. It is the most prestigious award that a layman can receive. It is named after the first National Laymen president John L. Webb from Hot Springs, AR who served from 1923 to 1946.

 

How Do Men Get Named National Layman of the Year?

A man must be recommended from someone.

 

What are the Qualifications?

A man must be active in his laymen's movement at his local church, district association, state convention and the National Baptist Laymen's Movement. He must be in good standing in the Discipleship ministry.

 

What is Needed?

The person that is recommending a candidate must:

    1. Submit a resume on the man that is being recommended that includes his laymen's work

        in his local church, district, state, and national. Other community work can be included.

 

    2. Submit letters of recommendation from his pastor and other leaders. i.e. local laymen president,

        state laymen president, state convention president, etc.

 

    3. The man being recommended must attend the John L. Webb Banquet.

Alfred White Jr Laymen Retreat

Christian Friends,

We are asking that you send in your numbers this week  for camp.(How many Jr. Laymen & Sr. Laymen will attend camp)  It is an impossible task to properly plan for our FOOD and activities if we do not have a count.  If at all possible and your funds are available you can also send in your monies to Bro. Billy Hall, 4424 Woodson Road, STL, MO 63134 .  If you have any questions, Please call me at 314.498.0519.  We are making plans now and would need this information ASAP,  Please comply?

Want to send a special thank you to the President Harold Robinson of the Antioch District Laymen Ministry and Moderator Griffin for being the first and only district to send in their numbers.  I am very grateful for this!

This is what they sent and you can do the same. so far we have approximately 12 boys and 3 adults committed to go from Antioch we need support with transportation for any more.

Also please distribute flyers so that the proper information is known and so that an expedited response is shared?

Walter Cade, Jr. Southwest Workshop Highlights

Alabama Wins Trophy for Most Delegates

 

Hot Springs, AR -- This past weekend, July 20 - 22, 2012, the Walter Cade, Jr. Southwest Workshop (Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas) convened in the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas. Hot Springs is noted for being the home city of first laymen president John L. Webb. Webb served from 1923 to 1946. He convened the first laymen's session in 1924 in Nashville, TN.

 

There were more than 400 in attendance for the workshop and more than 600 at the banquet. There were approximately 40 persons in attendance who were attending their first Walter Cade workshop.

Alabama won the trophy with the most delegates for the third consecutive year. They had 127 paid delegates. The totals for the other states were:

127 - Alabama

100 - Mississippi

  83 - Texas

  75 - Tennessee

  39 - Arkansas

    6 - Louisiana

 

Isaiah Ward from Mississippi was the bible bowl winner on Friday night. The keynote speaker for the Saturday banquet was A. L. Folmar, president of the Alabama State Laymen.

 

More than 80 people attended the street service on Saturday afternoon with Rev. Bobby Land from Tyler, Texas serving as the street evangelist. Bill Campbell serves as the program coordinator.

Matthew Simmons Turns 90 Years Old

Receives Surprise Birthday Party

  

Matthew SimmonsOxford, MS -- On Saturday, July 14, 2012 Matthew Simmons turned 90 years old. Rosie Goosby and the friends of Brother Simmons surprised him with a birthday party to honor him and give recognition of this great blessing.

 

Simmons is a long time laymen who supports his local, district and state organizations. He has served in many capacities and continues to support when he can.

 

Simmons is an armed service veteran where he has received a Purple Heart (left) for his dedicated service for his country. He received a birthday note from the President of the United States of America, President Obama and Mrs. Obama.

 

Simmons is a World War II veteran where in his laymen's services used those leadership he learned in the armed services to be persistent and faithful to the laymen causes and activities. 

 

Simmons believes he still has something to offer the young men of the movement and can impart wisdom and knowledge to assist them in the work of the kingdom.

 

There were many family and friends in attendance as they celebrated his longevity, his friendly spirit and his love for all people.

 

Simmons believe age is just a number and looks forward to many more birthdays.

Richmond, CA -- This week during the state convention of the California Baptist State Convention, Jimmy Stuart of Richmond, California was elected president of the California State Laymen. He succeeds Donald Norwood. 

Stuart has been supporting the laymen's work for many years. He has been an integral part of the California State laymen and their programming. He has invited national laymen teams and officers to conduct workshops for the men of the convention over the years.

 

Next year, April 2013, the California State Laymen will host the Walter Cade, Jr. Farwest Workshop. The tentative city is Oakland. Stuart will give leadership to its planning and hosting the men and women from the Farwest states. The workshop was held this past April in Sea-Tac, WA.

 

Adopt-A-School Workshops Planned by Laymen in Kansas City, KS and Memphis, TN

Adopt-A-SchoolKansas City, KS -- Under the leadership of Charles Ewing and Robert Pope, the National Baptist Laymen Adopt-A-School initiative has gotten a shot-in-the-arm. Ewing and Pope have reinvigorate the ministry and is now taken off with necessary training by one of the top Adopt-A-School Ministries in the United States.

On August 11th at the Eighth Street Baptist Church, president Simmons' church, a workshop will be held for area churches and laymen groups to find out how to start, organize a partnership with local schools to mentor school age children.

The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Tony Evans, Dallas, TX and his The Urban Alternative Ministry. The National Laymen has modeled their program after The Urban Alternative. Workshops will be held in Memphis, TN at the New Hope Baptist Church, The August 11th Workshop at Eighth Street and in Atlanta, GA during the Annual Session.

Churches in these locals are invited to send delegates to the workshop. Robert Pope can be contacted for the Memphis workshop and Harold Simmons can be contacted for the Kansas City, Kansas workshop.

 

 

 

Empire State Laymen to Sponsor Annual Workshop

Rochester, NY -- The laymen of the Empire Missionary Baptist State Convention will sponsor their annual Clemmon H. Hodges Workshop. The workshop is an annual event on the Empire State laymen calendar where the attendance always exceeds expectations.

 

James Josey (left) is the president of the Empire State Laymen. The workshop will be held July 18 - 21 in Rochester, NY at the Rochester Plaza Hotel.

 

President Harold Simmons will be the special guest lecturer for the workshop.
